DUBAILAND -
Thanks to Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid To The Maktoum, an enormous tourist centre called Dubailand is being built.
This new complex will cover an area of 278 sq.km. and will make Disneyworld pale into insignificance. It will include 45 large projects and 200 smaller projects consisting of water parks, teaching parks, nature parks, sport parks, a formula one park and numerous hotels and shopping centres etc. The first phase will be finished by the end of 2008 (you can see pictures of the work in progress on this page) but the whole project will not be completed until many year later. The current estimation is between 2015 and 2018. From the year 2010 fifteen million tourists a year are expected.The water park project "Aqua Dunya" is being built by the Canadian firm Forrec (who also built Mediapolis and Spa Millennium Park for Albiano).
It will be built on an area of 75 hectares and as a centrepiece will have a huge model of the ship The Desert Pearl, which ran aground completely deserted. Opening expected: 2008.The Arabic Emirates is a nation or better still, a federation, of 7 Emirates of which Dubai (video) and Abu Dabi are the best known. Abu Dabi is the capital and has around one million inhabitants living there from the nations total of four million. Dubai is the architectural town of the future where they are currently constructing further land in the Persian Gulf. The United Arab Emirates (Al-Imarat al-'Arabiyyah al-Muttahidah), and oil rich nation is situated in the southeast of the Arabic peninsula in south west Asia and is composed of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras to the-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm to the-Quwain. Before 1971 it was known as the States of the truce (Trucial States), with reference to truce plans in the XIX century between the British and some Arab sheiks. This truce was not broken but there was pirate activity along this stretch of water. Dubai is distinguished from the other emirates as only 10% of its gross national product has been derived from the oil industry.
The greater source of riches for Dubai are, in fact, the special economical zone of Jebel Ali and tourism, which is constantly growing. But the true development of Dubai happened in 1992 when this new and modern town was created.The combined aim of both the commercial and tourist departments is to create one of the largest and finest architectural structures in the world. In 2006 Dubai were using around 23% of the world's cranes for the construction of dozens of skyscrapers around the city. The city itself is still not finished with much construction taking place in the desert zone. Development is, in fact, the main econonomical activity. Both the commercial and residential building is extending into the so far uninhabited regions near the desert. They are currently constructing The Intenational City, The Silicon City, The Sport City and Dubailand which is destined to become the largest theme park in the world. Another large tourist construction is concentrated along the coast where the Three Palms is in it's first stage and is due to be completed in 2015. These artificial peninsulas are being created in the Persian Gulf and their shape will represent palm trees. If you go there, make sure you do not forget to go and play golf on one of the many incredible golf courses in the city.
